Using Affirmations to Alter Your Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are formed over a long period of time when the same negative thoughts are replayed in the mind. Repetitive thoughts eventually become ingrained in our belief system, leading to low self-esteem, low confidence and self-doubt.

Find out how you can use affirmations to alter your beliefs.

The Rise of Affirmations

Affirmations are fast becoming a popular choice when it comes to changing self beliefs, and it’s not difficult to see why; they are beautifully uplifting and inspiring, and are so simple to use.

We already use affirmations, whether we consciously choose to or not – they are the words, feelings and thoughts we have that relate to ourselves and our lives. A lot of the thoughts we think might be extremely negative, which will impact us negatively – saying phrases like, “I hate my life,” will create more negativity for you.

Whereas positive thoughts have shown to enhance our quality of life. Simply telling yourself each day, “I love my life,” will eventually make a big difference to the way you perceive and feel about your life.

In September this year Soul Analyse carried out a survey among 1,000 people to find out how affirmations impact our quality of life – of the people who said they were satisfied with their lives, 66% of them said they used affirmations. The research also found that the majority of people who were unhappy didn’t use affirmations at all, or had never heard of them.

What we know now is that the nature of our thoughts directly correlates with how happy we are and also impacts many other areas of our lives, such as our relationships, health and even wealth.

Repetition is Key

In order to alter negative beliefs, we must create new ones using a similar process that created the issue in the first place – repetition. It’s good to have a routine in place where you become familiar with saying affirmations regularly, so why not set some reminders that will prompt you to say them at least once a day?

A personal favourite is post-it notes; I usually write my affirmations out and stick them in prominent places around my home. For example, on my fridge I have a post-it note that reads, “I only feed my body goodness,” this prompts me to grab something healthy when I reach for the fridge.

I also have a post-it note on my mirror that says, “I am beautiful,” – egotistical? No. Self-loving? Yes! All too often we put ourselves down and we look in the mirror identifying our flaws, which further weakens our self image. A few kind words can go a long way to helping us feel confident about ourselves.

The more we work on our affirmations the more effective they are; once a day is a minimum but there is no limit to how much you say them, and you can tailor them to fit your individual needs and wishes.

At Soul Analyse, we are so passionate about being surrounded by affirmations that we have launched a range of affirmation bangles. I AM Bands are bangles that contain affirmations and aim to serve as reminders. For instance, the I AM Thankful bangle will prompt you to feel grateful at any given moment; gratitude is known to improve happiness and make us feel satisfied with what we already have, which in turn, creates more fulfilment.

The Secret to Affirmations Many People Aren’t Aware Of

It is not only the words that are important when it comes to saying affirmations, we must feel the feelings that those words stir within us. This is a crucial step because unless we begin to believe our affirmations, they won’t work.

If we use the affirmation “I am beautiful” but still look in the mirror and think badly of the way we look, the affirmation will lose effectiveness. We must align our feelings with the affirmation to ensure we get the most out of them. Call it fake it until you make it, if you like, but you have to feel that you already have whatever it is that you are affirming in order for it to materialise.
