Q&A: How long does Positive Thinking take to Work?

WEEKLY-QA

WEEKLY Q&AQ: Dear Soul Analyse,

I have been using positive thinking for a while now, I decided to give it a try last May following a turbulent period I went through. I have learned to become mindful of my thoughts, as you suggest, and I try to change negative thoughts for positive thoughts. I also meditate whenever I get the chance. I have seen some improvements, I got a new job, which I enjoy and I’ve finally got a handle on my finances but I still have bouts of sadness and feel down quite a lot. If I’m honest, I sometimes wonder if positive thinking really does work. If it works, how long will it be till I start feeling really good and begin to see the benefits?

Yours, Anon

A: Dear Anon,

First of all, well done for choosing to improve your life. When we experience difficult times we are often faced with two choices – self-destruct or self-growth, and it definitely sounds like you chose the latter, good for you!

While we sympathise with your frustration of not seeing the results you want quick enough, it has to be said that you have a large role to play in this; it may be that there are some areas of your life that you need to work on. Forgiveness, for example, is key in the process of self-growth, perhaps you are holding onto bad feeling from the past? If so, we recommend that you focus on forgiving those who have hurt you. Holding onto anger and resentment only stops you from moving on. You might like to read “How to Forgive“, which will point you in the right direction.

You mentioned that you have become a spectator of your thoughts and you are meditating, both of which we highly recommend. There are also many other techniques you can use that will help with healing and getting you to the place you want to be. It might be worth reading “You can’t Love Until you Love Yourself“, which includes tips on affirmations and staying present in the moment.

Finally, the process of self-healing takes time and patience, and as long as you address issues, such as forgiveness and self-love, your life will improve. Doubts will only hold you back, so put your faith in the universe and yourself, and be patient.
