How to Look Great in Your Own Skin

There is nothing more intriguing, and indeed attractive, than someone who looks good in their own skin. They have a certain flair of confidence, which is by no means tied to arrogance, but tells you that they know who they are and that they’re comfortable with it.

You too can look and feel good in your own skin, here I explain how:

Getting to Know You…

One of my favourite quotes of all time is this: “Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom” -Lao Tzu.

How can you ever be yourself if you don’t know who you are? Not in terms of tastes and preferences, but rather who you are on the inside. In order to establish your purpose in life and gain a better understanding of yourself, you need to connect with your soul.

It is our soul that defines us. Not the clothes we wear, the job we do, or anything else that is separate from our soul. It is the compassion, the kindness, the love and every other incredible gift that we possess as humans – that makes us who we are.

Go on a journey of self-growth and discovery – find out what you really want to gain out of life, whether it’s inner peace, a life filled with happiness or a life dedicated to helping others. Who knows? Only you can find out!

Comparison is a Losing Game

When we look for disparities between others and ourselves, we seek reasons as to why we are different from them. In turn, we are faced with self-criticism, self-doubt and negative self-talk.

Our lives suddenly don’t seem so great and we are left with emptiness, along with a general feeling that we just aren’t good enough. That’s what we’re dealing with when we enter into a game of comparison.

Ironically, it is the very resistance to be who we are that causes us to compare. When we are comfortable in our own skin, we don’t look to other people for assurance.

E-v-e-r-y-one experiences jealousy and compares themselves to others at one point or another, so don’t feel bad about it – but do realise that you have a choice over how you handle it.

If a twinge of jealousy or a feeling of inferiority stops you in your tracks, don’t take it any further. Allow the thought to enter and leave your mind with little resistance, and it will pass.

It helps to know that although our outer lives may contain stark differences, we all share the same kinds of feelings. When you realise this, you understand that there’s no need for comparison because we are all connected.

According to Buddhism, it’s best to approach every situation with a positive outlook, ourselves included. See your flaws as quirks and your fear as motivation. Love every little thing that makes you who you are.

We spend our lives yearning for people to love us for who we are, when all we really need is to love ourselves.

Nobody Does You Better Than You

Life is full of influences – from the people around us, the media, social media, latest trends, crazes, diets, fads, you name it. But if we allow ourselves to be influenced by these things, we become an imitation of everything around us.

While it’s tempting to join the crowd and commit to what society, peers, family and friends, expect from us, it doesn’t always coincide with what we want.

You are not the interpretation of someone else, you are a perfectly imperfect individual, and there will never be anyone quite like you, so never allow your identity to be outshined by what others want from you.

Stay true to yourself in every way possible; whether it means setting boundaries, leaving negative situations behind, deciding your future, having the courage to delve into the unknown, whatever it may be, do it in line with who you are.
